R&D Products, LLC - The Smart Bed Video

The video is a time lapsed demonstration of a person laying on a pressure sensitive Smartbed by R&D Products, LLC, that features Flexpoint Bend Sensor^® Technology.

The purpose of this video is to demonstrate how our mattress and sensing system allow the bed to respond in accordance to changes in position, or to provide the ability to design programs which will allow prescribed response to specific conditions in the human body. Thanks to the Flexpoint Bend Sensor^® Technology, the mattress has the ability to detect where the body is positioned on the mattress and to determine where direct high pressure skin contact is greatest and then uses that data to adjust pressure levels in the bed in the precise areas where adjustment is required.

The technology allows areas, such as the pelvic region, to have many changing pressures which will allow the care-giver to support or not support the targeted region. This will promote a constant blood flow, and ultimately eliminate, or at least lower the risk of bed sores. An optional heel pressure relief bladder can be positioned for patients of any height.

All thirty chambers are independently pressure controlled. Each chamber has a bend sensor attached which is also connected to a control unit. The design of the bed, in conjunction with the integrated bend sensor technology, enables accurate patient assessment and design of specific treatment regimes. When the Bend Sensor^® detects increased pressure areas or adjustments in the position of the patient, it instructs the control center to adjust the chambers in order to eliminate or decrease potential high pressure skin contact. THIS ADJUSTMENT IS NOT RANDOM, THE MATTRESS CONSTANTLY MONITORS THE BODY PLACEMENT AND ANY PATIENT MOVEMENT AND RESPONDS TO THOSE CHANGES. The patient in this video is motionless. If she were to move the mattress would automatically readjust to her new position. In the video demonstration, the areas of high pressure are shown in red. You can see the reaction of the bed by watching the red areas on the video decrease and disappear as the chambers in the mattress redirect the pressure. The mattress will optimally redirect the pressure areas after a predetermined period of time (frequency adjustable for optimal patient treatment needs).

The design capability of the mattress also gives the caregiver the ability to have the mattress eliminate pressure in a targeted region. For example, you may want the mattress to eliminate pressure in the left pelvic region for three minutes, and then shift the pressure to another part of the body for only two minutes. The possibilities are endless and can be designed with almost any configuration. All of this can be recorded on an SD card and stored for future reference.
